They belong to the " Michigan Amish Churches", an Amish affiliation that is more open to outsiders than most other Amish affiliations. The MOFGA-run Common Ground Country Fair moved with the organization and annually brings more than 50,000 visitors to the town.ĭuring 2008–2009, eight Amish families moved into the community. In 1996, the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) purchased 200 acres of land in Unity, where it is now based. It remained in operation until 1953 when it closed and a new elementary school was built. The name was changed to Unity upon incorporation as a town in 1804. The name came from its being located on a pond twenty-five miles from Fort Halifax in Winslow. When originally settled by Quakers, the town was known as Twenty-Five Mile Pond Plantation. As of 2007, the college is the town's largest employer. Unity College was founded in 1965 to offset the economic effects of the declining chicken farming industry. Outside of Waldo County, it is best known as the home of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, its Common Ground Country Fair and Unity College. The town is the service center for the northern portion of Waldo County. The population was 2,292 at the 2020 census. The watershed area surrounding the pond consists of 16.2% developed land, 71.7% non-developed land (consisting mostly of forest), and 12.1% surface water. The lake has been subject to eutrophication caused historically by agricultural runoff and effluent from a canning factory, and is on the state Nonpoint Source Priority Watersheds list, owing to the occurrence of summer algal blooms caused by phosphorus nutrient addition by runoff water. As subsistence agriculture declined in the 1940s, it was replaced by poultry and dairy farming, and seasonal camps were built along the lake shore. Canneries were established in the area from the 1920s to the 1950s. Deforestation made agriculture possible, which continued in the lands adjoining the lake well into the 20th century. By 1830, however, deforestation caused most of the sawmills to close. By the early 1800s, sawmills were established along the three main tributaries to the lake. Unity Pond (Lake Winnecook) History Įuropeans first settled Unity Pond in 1785. Kanokolus Beach on the southwest shore and Burnham Town Beach are both open to the public. It is also used for boating, fishing, camping, and swimming. The lake is surrounded by almost 300 residences, of which slightly more than half are seasonal. The sole outflow is Twenty-Five Mile Stream, via a wetlands to the southwest of the lake, which in turn feeds into the Sebasticook River. The main tributaries are Meadow Brook, Bithers Brook, and Carlton Stream. It is within the towns of Unity, Burnham, and Troy.
